Police found 45 trash bags containing human remains in a ravine near Guadalajara while searching for several missing call center workers.

The Mexican Jalisco state prosecutor’s office confirmed the findings on Wednesday, revealing that the bags were found below a forest overlook. Utilizing a helicopter, firefighters and civil defense teams began airlifting some remains from the deep Mirador del Bosque gorge. They will continue the recovery operation in the coming days.

The search for the seven missing people began when Mexican authorities received reports Tuesday, May 30 about their disappearance from a call center in Zapopan. They found the body parts during their investigation after acting on a tip. The Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office, leading the inquiry into the deaths, stated that preliminary information suggests the body parts match the physical characteristics of some of the missing call center employees.

The initial discovery was made with the unearthing of the first black plastic bag containing remains. Due to challenging terrain and limited natural light, the search resumed the following day. While the exact number of bodies is yet to be determined, the remains belong to both men and women.

The Jalisco Forensic Medical Service will be crucial in identifying the victims, determining the number of casualties, and establishing the causes of death.

The country’s overall homicide rate remains alarmingly high. Federal government data reveals that Mexico has over 110,000 missing persons, with Jalisco, known for its drug cartel activity, having the highest number of missing individuals at 15,000.
