A two-year-old girl died after running into the path of an oncoming car on Sunday near the beach on Tybee Island, Georgia.
The accident occurred around 5:45 p.m. in the Strand Avenue parking lot at 15th Street. The Georgia Public Safety Department released a statement confirming the girl’s identity as Rae’Lynn Michelle Milton.
Milton and her family were standing in the parking lot alongside parked vehicles when the accident occurred, the police said in the statement. The vehicle approached them in a northbound direction, and as it got closer, the toddler ran into the roadway in front of it and was run over before the driver had a chance to stop. She was immediately transported to Memorial Medical Center. Doctors pronounced her dead at 6:19 p.m.
Authorities have not given additional details about the accident, including the vehicle’s speed and the driver’s identity.
Tybee Island is about 18 miles east of Savannah, Georgia and has the state’s largest public beach.
