A 17-year-old high school cheerleader was fatally shot after leaving a house party in Tolleson, Arizona, during the early hours of Mother’s Day, May 14.
Law enforcement authorities responded to the scene shortly after midnight, where they discovered the lifeless body of Desiree Rivas. Desiree, a bright student enrolled at Cesar Chavez High School, was not only highly regarded for her exceptional academic achievements but also known as a spirited member of the school’s cheerleading team.
Expressing their grief, the Cesar Chavez High School Spirit Line released an Instagram statement, mourning the tragic loss of their beloved teammate. Desiree was cherished for her outstanding qualities as a friend, athlete, and student.
As the investigation into the incident unfolds, the police have yet to identify any suspects.
Neighbors living near the scene recalled the terrifying moments when gunshots pierced the air, prompting them to rush to Desiree’s aid. April Stokes, who was in her bed at the time, described the shots, which were so loud that they seemed to originate from her own yard. Another neighbor, who stayed at the scene to provide support, shared her sleepless night filled with anguish for Desiree’s grieving mother.
Principal Robert Grant addressed the families with the devastating news of Desiree’s untimely passing. He acknowledged Desiree’s significant role as a beloved member of the student body and an active participant in the Spirit Line, highlighting the impact she had on those fortunate enough to know and care for her.
In Desiree’s honor a memorial vigil was organized, drawing a crowd of over 100 attendees, including friends, family, and classmates, who came together to mourn her loss. Danny Rivas, Desiree’s father, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, recognizing the profound effect his daughter had on the lives of many.
