A Tesla owner got into a fight with another man at a charging station in Denver and was shot.

Authorities have confirmed that an argument at an electric vehicle charging station in suburban Denver resulted in the death of a Tesla driver, while another person was taken into custody.

According to Jenny Fulton, a spokesperson for Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the second man involved in the altercation, which erupted in a parking lot outside a food court in Edgewater, later contacted the authorities to report his involvement in the shooting that occurred on Wednesday, May 3. He was detained by police.

Fulton stated that two shots were fired during the incident, and the 33-year-old man who tragically lost his life was taken to the hospital with a single gunshot wound. Police have not yet disclosed the identities of the shooter and his victim.

It remains unclear whether both shots were discharged by the man who turned himself in. Authorities have also not disclosed a motive for the shooting, and it is unclear whether the suspect was an electric vehicle driver. Investigators have not yet revealed the exact cause of the altercation.

With nearly 18,000 Superchargers across the US, Tesla allows drivers to recharge their vehicles for up to 200 miles in just 15 minutes. As part of the US government’s initiative to have 500,000 accessible chargers for all electric vehicles by 2030, Tesla plans to open at least 7,500 Superchargers to all electric vehicles, not just Tesla vehicles, by the end of 2024. Previously exclusive to Tesla owners, this decision has sparked concerns among some Tesla drivers who fear longer wait times for the fast-charging facilities.
