The family of 25-year-old Rasheem Carter, who was found dead and decapitated in Mississippi, held a protest on Saturday, April 29, demanding justice after additional remains were discovered.
Carter’s family organized a protest in Taylorsville, Mississippi, voicing their frustration with the police’s handling of the case and accusing authorities of obstructing the investigation.
In October 2022, Carter’s mother, Tiffany Carter, who lives in the nearby town of Fayette, reported her son missing shortly after he called her, saying he was scared because a group of white men in trucks were harassing him. Tiffany mentioned that her son told her he was being chased by three truckloads of white men who wanted to harm him. During a recent press conference, she said she urged him to go to the nearest police station for protection.
Tommy Cox, chief of the Laurel Police Department, which handled the initial missing person case at the family’s request, confirmed that Carter visited the Taylorsville Police Department twice before his disappearance. A month later, his remains were found in a wooded area near Taylorsville. Although authorities initially stated that they did not suspect foul play, they continued investigating the incident.
National civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Carter’s family, previously disclosed that Carter’s head had been severed from his body, and some body parts were missing.
Carter’s family believes his death was a “modern-day lynching” and is demanding more information from law enforcement. In March, the police stated that there was no evidence of murder, suggesting instead that animals might have caused the damage to his body.
A deer camera recorded footage of Carter in the Mississippi woods on the day he was reported missing. Tiffany Carter, speaking to Insider, expressed her belief that he was in a desperate struggle for his life.
In a statement released on Thursday, Attorney Crump revealed that the Mississippi Crime Lab informed the family that another set of remains, found in February, is linked to Carter.
The family is now calling for a federal investigation into Carter’s death.
