Congressional Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene sparked intense controversy on Thursday, May 18, as she took the unexpected step of introducing articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden.
The reason for this startling action hinged on her criticism of the President’s handling of the increased influx of migrants at the US-Mexico border.
Through a statement filled with severe accusations, Greene criticized President Biden, attributing the abuse of his presidential powers to his handling of border security. She argued that President Biden had intentionally threatened national security by failing to enforce immigration laws and secure the border. Greene went on to claim that the Biden administration’s lenient approach had allowed unauthorized individuals from a staggering 160 countries to illegally enter the US, while leaving border patrol bereft of necessary resources and effective policies.
Greene raised additional accusations in the articles of impeachment. She linked the rise in illegal border crossings and the smuggling of hazardous substances like fentanyl directly to the Biden administration. She also accused the administration of violating the law by releasing unauthorized immigrants within the borders of the US.
Nonetheless, it appears that Greene’s impeachment initiative may be met with significant political resistance, as House Republicans lack the majority required to impeach President Biden. This echoes previous unsuccessful attempts to impeach the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, indicating a trend of ineffective impeachment endeavors among Republicans.
Greene’s second article of impeachment suggests that Biden has put Americans in harm’s way by allowing COVID-19-positive unauthorized immigrants into the country without proper health screenings. Her third article alleges that Biden’s border policies have created a national security crisis, endangering the lives of US citizens.
In the face of these allegations, President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas have reiterated that the border remains closed and have continuously discouraged illegal crossings. In response to Greene’s impeachment push, the White House issued a statement. A spokesperson emphasized the political motives of Greene’s impeachment move and spotlighted her prior contentious statements, such as her calls to defund the FBI and her involvement in the events following the January 6 insurrection.
