Another Google employee jumped to his death at the tech company’s headquarters in New York City.

Police reported that a 31-year-old man, employed as a senior software engineer, jumped from the 14th floor of the search giant’s headquarters in Chelsea late Thursday, May 4. The incident occurred around 11:30 pm when the man, whose name has not yet been released, plunged from 111 Eighth Avenue.

Police found the man unconscious after responding to multiple 911 calls of an unresponsive person lying on the ground at the company’s headquarters. He was immediately rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Sources said that officers found handprints on the ledge of a 14th-floor open-air terrace at the scene. However, investigators found no note or video of the fatal plunge.

This tragic event comes months after Jacob Pratt, another Google employee who also worked at the headquarters, committed suicide. New York Police Department officers found Pratt hanging in an apartment in Chelsea just before 6 pm on February 16.

Google expressed condolences over the death of the senior software engineer, stating that they were saddened to learn of his passing and offered support to his family and colleagues. The company did not provide any additional information on the incident.

Google laid off about 12,000 people in January, equivalent to six percent of the company’s global workforce. In contrast, the company’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, was paid $226 million last year, which was extensively criticized by employees. It is worth noting that Pichai only received $6.3 million for his services as CEO in 2021. Google did not provide any comment about Pichai’s significant compensation package.

The American Psychological Association revealed that the technology industry has some of the highest rates of employee burnout, with workers in this sector experiencing stress levels significantly higher than the national average.
