Several professional lip readers have proposed possible theories about what may have upset the King at his coronation.
King Charles III was caught on camera speaking in a frustrated manner while waiting for his coronation to begin. The clip went viral worldwide, and people speculated about what might have upset the King and what he might have said to his wife.
Sitting in his coach with Camilla, Charles waited for the signal to enter Westminster Abbey for the ceremony. Prince William and Kate and their children arrived late to the historical event, causing them to join the procession behind King Charles instead of entering Westminster Abbey before him. Charles appeared to vent his frustration as they waited several minutes, according to two lip readers who independently viewed the footage.
According to one of the lip readers, Charles said, “I’m worried about time, I mean it’s been longer this time and, welI… I mean look! I know.”
A second lip reader believed he said, “We can never be on time. Yes, I’m…this is a negative. There’s always something.”
On Monday, Kensington Palace released a behind-the-scenes video of William, Kate, and their children getting ready for the coronation, with footage showing the family racing to a waiting vehicle to make it to the ceremony.
The King has been in the spotlight for his brief displays of bad temper since his mother passed away last year, particularly for two incidents captured on camera. In one incident, he indicated to an aide, through gritted teeth, to clear his desk, and in another, he became angry over a faulty pen while signing important documents.
Another off-the-cuff moment of the King was caught on camera during the coronation concert. Host Hugh Bonneville began his speech by congratulating the new King and Queen before honoring Charles’ love of the arts, saying that Charles himself is a painter, and referred to the artist formerly known as Prince, which caused Charles to laugh before frowning at the clever line.
All of this just goes to show that the King, like the rest of us, is human.
