A San Antonio, Texas man and his girlfriend have been arrested for the shooting death of their eight-month-old daughter.

Police arrested 20-year-old Alejandro Dominic Martinez after an argument with his girlfriend, Rosa Marie Mora, 21, led to the tragic death of their eight-month-old daughter, Rosalinda Martinez. Police charged Martinez with one count of reckless injury to a child resulting in significant bodily harm after court records revealed that he had stuffed a handgun into his waistband during the argument with Mora, causing it to go off and fatally wound their daughter.

The incident occurred on April 12 when Martinez picked up Mora from work, and an argument broke out in the car. Although the initial cause of the argument is unclear, it eventually escalated to money issues and Mora’s handgun, which Martinez had in his possession. During the argument, Martinez reportedly stuffed the firearm into his waistband.

Mora exited the car in front of her sister’s building, holding their daughter, and continued arguing with Martinez. As Mora demanded that Martinez return the gun to her and tried to take it back, the gun went off, striking both Mora and baby Rosalinda. Rosalinda tragically died from her injuries.

Mora was struck in the hand and was treated at a hospital, but she was later released and arrested for the same reckless injury charge as Martinez. Several members of Mora’s family stated that Martinez has a history of violence against Mora.

Martinez was out on bond for previously assaulting Mora in February. He was charged with one count of assault on a pregnant woman. Court records showed that Martinez was not allowed contact with Mora and was not permitted to possess a firearm while on pretrial release.

Martinez had been on the run from law enforcement for almost a month after his daughter’s shooting. Police found him at a motel and arrested him on May 6. He faces charges of injuring a child and violating the conditions of bond/protective order in addition to his previous charges.
