A devastating incident at a Washington high school resulted in the death of a young student during a gym class.
Superintendent Ben Ferney of Cheney Public Schools informed the public that 16-year-old sophomore Brayden Bahme suffered a fatal injury during a physical education session.
According to fire officials, Bahme was accidentally impaled in the eye, and the school later confirmed that the injury occurred when he collided with a goalpost while running.
Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly before 2 pm on Thursday, April 27, and transported the unconscious boy to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center. Unfortunately, Bahme could not survive his extensive injuries.
A heartfelt candlelight vigil was held on Monday, May 1, at 6 pm at Crunk’s Field in Cheney to honor Brayden’s life. Participants wore blue attire, symbolizing his love for fishing. Attendees were also encouraged to bring fishing-related items, which would be donated to a youth fishing organization in memory of Brayden.
A GoFundMe page has raised over $30,000, and the school announced that any remaining funds would be dedicated to the youth fishing program, preserving Brayden’s passion and legacy.
This tragic event is part of a concerning series of bizarre accidents on high school premises, which have raised alarms among parents, educators, and school administrators.
In October 2019, a Pennsylvania high school student was hospitalized after accidentally cutting several fingers off while using a table saw in a woodshop class.
In January 2020, a student at McKinney North High School in Texas suffered burns during a welding class.
In March 2020, a student at Waukegan High School in Illinois sustained severe burns due to a chemical explosion during a chemistry experiment.
Most recently, in 2022, a 15-year-old high school football player in Bloomington, Minnesota, was gravely injured in a freak accident on the field during a tackle defense.
