A 12-year-old child and a 20-year-old man have been charged with murder following the shooting death of a Sonic employee in Keene, Texas.
The police report states that the 12-year-old used an AR-15 rifle to kill a Sonic drive-in employee during an altercation with another man, who was also arrested and charged in connection with the shooting.
The incident took place on Saturday, May 13, around 10 pm when the Keene Police Department received several calls about a shooting at the drive-through restaurant. Responding officers discovered 32-year-old Matthew Davis suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
Angel Gomez, 20, was involved in a dispute in the Sonic parking lot with other occupants of his car when Davis, a Sonic employee, confronted him. As Davis approached, Gomez was allegedly urinating in the back of the parking lot. A physical altercation broke out, prompting the 12-year-old suspect, who was a passenger in Gomez’s car and has not been named, to retrieve the AR-15 rifle from the vehicle and open fire. Davis was struck and later died in the hospital.
Both the 12-year-old and Gomez fled the scene after the shooting. However, Gomez returned later and was arrested by police. Keene authorities, along with nearby agencies, tracked down the 12-year-old at a residence in Rio Vista, where they also discovered several firearms. Gomez faces charges of tampering with evidence for taking the AR-15 and leaving the scene, and his charges may be upgraded to murder. The 12-year-old has been charged with murder and is currently being held at a juvenile detention center in Granbury.
Davis, who had recently moved to Keene and started working at the restaurant a few weeks prior, leaves behind a ten-year-old son.
