A 42-year-old woman from Wisconsin tragically died in a car accident just five hours after saying her final goodbyes to her husband at his funeral on Saturday, April 1.

Sara Nowak died after getting involved in a car accident just hours after attending her husband Louis Nowak’s funeral. Louis had passed away on March 19 after a six-month battle with cancer. Sara attended his funeral on Saturday and was killed in a single-vehicle accident on State Highway 106 near Calkins Road in Palmyra, Wisconsin, later that evening.

According to a statement by Jefferson County Sheriff Paul Milbrath, Nowak was a passenger and the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The car then entered a ditch and overturned, ejecting one of the occupants but, unfortunately, both occupants died at the scene.  First responders provided assistance but could do nothing for the two victims who were already dead from their injuries.

Nowak’s mother, Patricia Cartwright, shared that she thought her daughter couldn’t be without her husband and is now with him. Her father, Randal Cartwright, said that the previous months had been harrowing for his daughter and son-in-law as she cared for him while he battled the disease, and described her as a positive person who always helped others. He described hearing of Sara’s tragic death only five and a half hours after the funeral of his son-in-law and said it was an extremely hard time for him.

Louis, 54, was remembered as a beloved person who enjoyed quality time with family and friends. He also loved fixing engines and motors, camping, swap meets, classic cars, and classic rock music.

Sara and Louis had both been married before and had six children between them. They were married in 2017, and Cartwright, speaking to a local news station, described them as a true match.

Sara was remembered for her warmth and her inclusive nature. According to her obituary, everyone was family to her, and she always had room for more. She enjoyed going on adventures with her husband and their children and making memories.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department said an investigation into the accident is still ongoing, but it’s clear that the community has lost two wonderful people.
