A man in San Antonio, Texas allegedly shot and killed a suspected car thief whom he tracked down using an Apple AirTag

The vehicle owner went with his relatives and found his stolen pickup truck in a parking lot nearly 20 miles away and confronted the man inside, identified as Andrew John Herrera

A physical fight occurred, and the owner ultimately shot Herrera, who died from a gunshot wound to the head. It is unknown whether the shooter will face charges, and the investigation is ongoing. The unidentified shooter alleged that Herrera pulled out a gun.

Responding officers found bullet casings and two cars with visible gunshots. Police did not confirm whether they found a gun in Herrera’s possession.

While Texas law allows individuals to use deadly force in self-defense, the police cautioned against taking the law into one’s own hands. Officer Nick Soliz advised people to wait for the police instead of confronting suspected thieves themselves, emphasizing that vigilante justice is never safe.

The use of Apple AirTag in this incident highlights the technology’s capability in helping people keep track of their personal items. However, the misuse of the device has raised concerns over privacy and security. In recent months, incidents of unwanted tracking and stalking using AirTags have increased, prompting calls for stricter regulations.

This case serves as a reminder that taking matters into one’s own hands can lead to deadly consequences. The police urge citizens to exercise caution and call for help rather than confronting suspected criminals. Additionally, the misuse of technology for harmful purposes highlights the need for better regulations and safeguards to prevent abuses.
