At least six people were hurt in a shooting on the Isle of Palms beach in South Carolina on Friday, April 7, with the majority of the victims being seniors in high school. Around 5:20 o’clock in the evening, police were already on the beach attempting to break up several fights when the incident occurred. While police were attending to other incidents, one of the fights turned violent and resulted in gunfire.

According to the police chief, they found weapons on the beach. At least six people, including an adult in their 30s or 40s, suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Prior to Spring break, senior high school students were gathered for a “senior skip day” gathering.

In connection with the shooting, two suspects were detained. A 16-year-old and Shawn Goods-Martin, 18, are accused of illegal gun possession.

In a tweet, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott expressed his sympathy for the victims and gratitude to the police and first responders.

The beaches and golf courses on the Isle of Palms make it a popular vacation spot. In advance of Spring break, the police had already planned to increase their visibility on the beach.

Spring break crowds reveling in the streets continue to cause problems. In March, in Miami Beach, authorities enforced a state of emergency and curfew due to the uncontrollable, disorderly crowds and two deadly shootings that the police struggled to manage during the Spring break.
