A Canadian man was stabbed to death outside a Starbucks in Vancouver after asking his attacker to stop vaping in front of his three-year-old daughter.
Paul Stanley Schmidt was with his daughter Erica, 3, at around 5:30 pm and his fiancée Ashley Umali was inside the shop getting drinks when Schmidt was stabbed, according to his mother, Kathy Schmidt.
The horrifying moment was caught on video and showed Schmidt suddenly being stabbed and falling to the ground as his daughter watched in horror. The video was circulated on social media, to the dismay of the family. They are requesting that the videos be taken down.
Schmidt’s mother told a local news outlet that the suspect, identified as Inderdeep Singh Gosa, 32, attacked her son because he asked him not to vape in front of his daughter.
Gosa was charged with second-degree murder.
Schmidt’s grieving mom said she was shocked that no one rushed to help her son, and that many witnesses were taking videos and not calling for help.
According to the police, an officer was flagged down at around 5:40 pm. The suspect was still in the area and did not resist arrest when apprehended.
Schmidt died after he was rushed to the hospital.
Police are looking for clues about what caused the murder. Sergeant Steve Addison said, “We believe this homicide was witnessed by dozens of bystanders, and there may be people with information who have not yet come forward.”
