Only one hour after running away from home, a 14-year-old middle school student committed suicide by hanging inside a California high school.
After receiving a call from a school employee, police in Olivehurst discovered the teen’s body on the second floor of Lindhurst High School. She was believed to have been reported missing from her nearby house at around 6 a.m. on Thursday, March 30. The teen’s identity has not been revealed.
Wendell Anderson, Sheriff of Yuba County, told reporters that it appears to be a suicide and that it is an ongoing, active investigation. The Sheriff said the death will probably shake up the 15,000-resident small town, which is located approximately 40 miles north of Sacramento.
The superintendent of the Marysville Joint Unified School District, Fal Asrani, said, “Today is traumatic for the whole community.”
The school was closed for the day due to the tragic incident.
For people between the ages of 10 and 34 in California, suicide is the second most common cause of death. It is the fourth most common death for individuals 35-54.
