A 13-year-old boy and three other members of a family were found dead in their home in New Richmond, Ohio, with another family member critically injured. The mother of the household committed the murder-suicide on February 27, and officers came across the horrific scene while attempting to serve an eviction notice to the parents.

Officers were called to the house after hearing shooting and were unable to contact the residents inside the house. They found five victims. Steven Cain, 50, Theresa Cain, 46, Ethan Cain, 13, and Teresa Cain’s father, William Felton, 74, dead. Daughter Samantha Cain, 20, was the only survivor, according to the sheriff’s office, and was reportedly in critical but stable condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Steve Cain was a singer in a local band called Critical Khaos.

The school district is mourning the death of the child, Ethan Cain, a middle school student, and hoping for the recovery of Samantha Cain, a New Richmond High School graduate in her second year of college.

Tracey Miller, superintendent of the New Richmond School District, stated that a brilliant young life had been stolen in the case of 13-year-old Ethan. According to Miller, teachers prioritized dealing with bereaved students and providing a team of counselors. Students had written words of sorrow and remembrance for Ethan on a bulletin board.

Samantha, according to Miller, is a charming, intellectual, and brilliant young woman. In a small school district, everyone knows everyone, and every tragedy is mourned.
