Former First Lady Michelle Obama just revealed that she broke down in tears shortly after leaving former President Trump’s inauguration in 2017.
Michelle said that the emotions of leaving the White House, which had served as her and her family’s home for eight years, coupled with the resentment and disappointment over Trump taking over, overwhelmed her so much that she cried hysterically.
Speaking at a podcast that streamed on Tuesday, March 7, Ms. Obama said that when the door finally shut, she cried uncontrollably for about 30 minutes straight, adding that they had been holding it together for the last eight years. This was in reference to her final trip on the presidential airplane.
The new revelation came out in “The Light Podcast,” launched on Audible on March 7. The former First Lady did the podcast during her recent book tour to promote her new book, “The Light We Carry.”
In her book, Obama reflects on how she dealt with self-doubt, anxiety, and relationships during uncertain times. The podcast captures conversations she has had during her visits to six cities, with moderators like Tyler Perry, Oprah Winfrey, Conan O’Brien, and David Letterman promoting and discussing her book.
Ms. Obama said that after Trump’s inauguration, the day was emotional for many different reasons, including the fact that they were leaving their family home. She said that daughters Sasha and Malia hardly remembered Chicago, having spent more time at the White House than anywhere else. It was hard for them to say goodbye to the staff and the people that helped raise the girls.
She said the day was also hard on them as they had to sit on the stage and watch everything they were against take the reins, adding that there was no “diversity” on the stage.
Obama also said that the crowd size was pretty small, in contrast to the false claims by Trump that it was the largest turnout ever.
Michelle tweeted on Monday, March 6, promoting the podcast and said that she hoped it would be inspirational for other people.
She also revealed in 2018 during an appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s “The Tonight Show” that she stopped trying to smile during the inauguration.
