Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene posted on Twitter on Monday, February 20, and said during an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Tuesday, that there needs to be a “national divorce” between the blue and red states in order to stop the country from heading toward a civil war.
Greene’s controversial proposal features attacks on “woke culture issues,” as she told Hannity that all her friends are regular Americans who were all sick and tired of being bullied, misused, and disrespected by the left.
Representative Greene, who called for President Biden’s impeachment last week, said that the ideas, policies, and ways of life for red and blue states had become so far apart that, if nothing was done about it, America would soon break out into civil war.
Since the Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional for states to secede after the American Civil War, it is virtually impossible for Greene’s plan to be implemented.
However, the Georgia Republican has been fielding the idea of a split since 2021 when she said she wanted to stop “woke” Californians from moving to Republican states like Florida. Last Tuesday, Greene also said that another part of her proposal was allowing Republican states to block Democrats who moved from a blue state from voting for five years.
Her concept may be gaining renewed traction thanks to her closeness with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. When Hannity asked if her proposal would ever win support, Greene pointed to the level of engagement her tweets were getting. She told the reporter it might be a bigger movement than the government realizes.
Even as her tweets notched up more than 70,000 likes and over 10,000 retweets on Wednesday morning, Greene was dealt criticism from both sides on her comments about splitting the country into Republican and Democrat states.
Many former and current GOP lawmakers immediately dismissed the proposal, including Senator Mitt Romney, who said they would not split the country.
