A 69-year-old Houston, Texas man was in his house when he heard his pet poodle in distress in the backyard on February 1.
He went outside to take a look and discovered his beloved pet being mauled by two large Staffordshire terrier mix dogs who had snuck in through a hole in the fence between his yard and his neighbor’s property.
The man tried to save his pup by trying to separate the dogs but the neighbor’s dogs attacked him, pushed him to the ground and mauled him for several minutes.
Meanwhile, neighbors called police and according to Houston Police Lt. Larry Crowson, the man was still being attacked when responding officers arrived.
Officers approached the dogs and tried to save the man, but one of the dogs charged at them, prompting one officer to open fire on the dogs.
The Houston Animal Shelter took the attack dogs away. The poodle had to be euthanized due to its severe injuries. The man did not survive the attack.
The animal owners could be charged by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
Dog attacks in the US unfortunately occur too often. A seven-year-old boy was mauled to death a week ago by a group of dogs in Idaho. The child was attacked while he was playing outside his trailer in Fort Hall. His mother went out to check on him and tried to save him. She sustained serious injuries when the dogs mauled her, and the boy was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Authorities put the dogs down and cited the owners for 15 animal ordinance violations.
