A horrific shark attack on a beach in New Caledonia, Australia, left a 59-year-old Australian man dead.
Horrified onlookers captured the attack on video, but it was too graphic to share. The video also captured two lifeguards’ heroic efforts to save the injured man. The two were seen desperately trying to scoop him up from the ocean and bring him back to shore after the attack.
The man was swimming about 150 meters from the shore when the creature, believed to have been a tiger shark about 13 feet long, launched a vicious attack, biting him multiple times on his legs and arms.
The footage showed a lifeguard carrying him on a jet ski and bringing him to shore, but he appeared unresponsive.
One of the lifeguards ran up and down the beach, calling for help, while the other pulled the man from the jet ski onto the ground. At some point, the lifeguard pulling the man to the ground appeared overwhelmed as he fell back into the water and struggled for a little while before the other lifeguard came back to help.
The two attempted CPR on the injured man, but their efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. He was placed on a stretcher and carried off the beach covered in a blanket.
The victim was reportedly on a solo vacation before the deadly attack.
The shark might have been attracted to the beach by food thrown into the ocean from a viewing platform of a nearby restaurant.
The beach had only been reopened to the public three days before Sunday’s fatal attack after a shark attacked a 49-year-old woman. The woman, Bridgette Do, lost her leg in a shark attack only a few feet from where the attack happened.
Another man was attacked in the same spot a few days after Do’s attack, but he managed to escape.
Authorities closed the beach again after the attack.
