The Suffolk County Police Department said that a homeowner on Cobblestone Court in Centereach called them at around 1 am on Monday, February 20, saying that he heard loud noises outside his home. When he checked footage from his surveillance cameras, he noticed six men had destroyed part of his fence.
The homeowner, Charles Damiani, is a retired corrections officer. He told the police that the loud noise sounded like a gun going off.
He ran outside, saw the vehicle the suspects were in, and noticed that some sections of his fence were destroyed. He returned to check the security footage, which showed the teenagers breaking through his fence.
The County Chief of Patrol Gerard Hardy said the teenagers were recording themselves as they ran through the fence and hit several other houses. He said four homes were hit that could be tied to the teens that night.
The teens were recording themselves as part of the “Kool-Aid Man” TikTok challenge that only started recently. The point of the challenge is to mimic some of the popular Kool-Aid commercials from the 1970s and 1980s.
The videos show someone running into random walls or fences, destroying them like the drink’s mascot.
The boys returned to Damiani’s home around 4 am and broke through the fence. They were not so lucky this time because the police were already at the retired correctional officer’s home to take a statement about the earlier incident.
According to Damiani, he heard another bang as he was talking to the police. He then ran into the road and stopped the car by jumping in front of it.
Responding officers arrested all six boys, whose ages ranged from 12 years to 18. The six teens are facing several third and fourth-degree criminal mischief charges.
They will be arraigned in Family District Court early next month.
