In a 2021 SiriusXM interview with Howard Stern that came to media attention again on Wednesday, comedian Seth Rogen said that Tom Cruise tried to recruit him and fellow comedian Judd Apatow to Scientology.
Rogen and Apatow both wondered if they had the will to refuse Cruise’s offer, and Rogen remembered thinking about the chances that he would avoid being converted as he admits to being weak-willed. (Perhaps he said that in jest, as comedians often do.)
Apatow declined the offer to join the religion and suggested they talk about movies and anything else, and Rogen was glad they dodged that bullet.
Tom Cruise is an influential figure in the Church of Scientology, which has been accused of being “a giant pyramid scheme cult.”
The difficulty of leaving Scientology is one of its most well-known characteristics and one of the reasons it has earned the label of “cult.”
Tom Cruise is supposedly a good friend of David Miscavige, the founder of Scientology, and was a best man at one of his weddings.
Leah Remini, a former Scientologist and prominent film and television personality, spoke openly about the religion in a Netflix series. She says that individuals in positions of authority in Scientology go through tremendous pains to ensure that Tom Cruise doesn’t see anything negative about the organization.
Remini asserts that Cruise is knowledgeable and aware of the mistreatment that takes place within Scientology as he has participated in it.
Celebrities at Tuesday night’s Golden Globes event gasped in response to presenter Jerrod Carmichael’s shocking joke regarding Scientology and Tom Cruise.
Carmichael held out three awards and remarked that he discovered the awards Tom Cruise had returned, and mockingly said that they should swap the awards for Shelly Miscavige’s safe return.
Shelly is David Miscavige’s wife, a prominent member, who has not been spotted in public since August 2007. Many Scientology critics have expressed alarm over her disappearance from the public eye.
