Former First Lady Michelle Obama shocked readers and viewers as she promoted her new book.
She talked about her feelings about her marriage to former US president, Barack Obama, in a Revolt TV roundtable interview. She said she “couldn’t stand” her husband for the first ten years of their marriage.
According to Michelle, she found herself resenting that she was doing most of the work taking care of the kids while Barack was working on his political career and was often traveling. The kids, Sasha and Malia, were young and it was Michelle’s responsibility to take care of them. At the same time, she was building her own career.
“And for 10 years, while we’re trying to build our careers and, you know, worrying about school and who’s doing what and what, I was like, ‘Ugh, this isn’t even,’” she said.
When Obama was elected president, the girls were ten and seven years old. The entire family lived in the White House during Obama’s presidency. Michelle said the kids cried a lot.
She admits that she realized that working towards a successful marriage is not always a mutual undertaking. There are times when one individual in the marriage ends up struggling more. Sometimes couples give up. They didn’t.
Despite some hard times, she said it was worth it. She said that she respected and admired her husband, in spite of everything they went through.
The two met in 1989 and were married three years later in 1992. They have just celebrated 30 years of marriage. Their daughters are now 24 and 21 and share a house located in Los Angeles.
Michelle is promoting her new book, “The Light We Carry,” which was published in November 2022. The couple also signed a joint deal in 2017 to publish their memoirs, a deal which is worth about $65 million.
