The memoir “Spare,” written by Prince Harry of the British royal family, was released in bookstores and for online sale on January 10. In the book, the Prince makes some startling accusations against members of his family.
While promoting his book, Prince Harry stunned many during two televised interviews – one with ITV and the other with “60 Minutes,” which aired on Sunday, January 8. He made accusations against members of the British royal family, especially Queen Consort Camilla.
The memoir presents a lot of criticism of his family and stories about his time in the UK. He explains why he and his wife Meghan split from the family in 2020.
Following are some highlights from the memoir.
Prince Harry Says He Was Attacked by Prince William
One of the most explosive claims that Harry made in the book was that Prince William physically attacked him during an argument that stemmed out of William’s comments about his wife, Meghan. Harry alleges that William referred to his wife as a “rude,” “difficult,” and “abrasive” woman.
Harry said the argument got so heated that William grabbed him, ripped off his necklace, and knocked him to the floor. The fight happened at the Nottingham cottage in London, where Harry and Meghan were living. William visited to discuss their relationship, which was going sour and ended up worse after the visit.
According to Harry, he tried to calm William down, but William shouted insults, grabbed him and knocked him down. William apologized later and asked Harry not to tell Meghan about the fight.
King Charles Pleaded with Harry and William to Mend Their Relationship
After leaving the UK, Prince Harry said he returned for his grandfather’s funeral in 2021. Prince Philip’s funeral was the first time since they moved to the US and had the interview with Oprah that Harry had reunited with his father, King Charles III, and his brother, Prince William.
While in the UK, Harry wanted to meet his father and brother to discuss reconciliation, but he quickly learned during a secret meeting that they had come ready to fight.
Harry claimed that during the rising tensions at the meeting, King Charles pleaded with his sons not to make his final years miserable.
William and Harry Asked King Charles Not to Marry Camilla
In the book, Harry revealed that he and Prince William pleaded with their father not to marry Camilla. Harry said that both he and William referred to Camilla as the “other woman,” because of Charles’ relationship with her before his marriage to Princess Diana, and which continued while he was married. Charles convinced them that his love for Camilla had survived the years, and they gave in to her becoming their stepmother, and ultimately, the Queen Consort.
Harry Searched for Closure After His Mother, Princess Diana’s Death
Harry revealed that in 2007, when he was in Paris for a royal engagement, he asked his chauffeur to drive through the tunnel where his mother died, at the high speed his mother’s car was alleged to have gone when it crashed.
Harry found it hard to believe that the accident happened the way history says it did, because the tunnel is short. He said that that night, all the doubts he had about the police account of his mother’s death dissolved.
He thought driving through the tunnel would bring him closure, but it made the pain worse.
Queen Elizabeth II’s Death
Harry writes how he found out about his grandmother’s death. A few days before she passed, his father called to tell him that her health had worsened. Harry sent Prince William a text to inquire when he and his wife were flying to Balmoral Castle, where the Queen was spending her last moments, but never got a reply.
Harry received a call from his father telling him to come to the castle, but that Meghan was not invited. He writes that he spoke to the Queen four days before her death. When he landed at the airport, he learned from the BBC website that his grandmother had passed away, and his father had become King.
