Saturday Night Live’s latest episode, which aired on Saturday, December 10, kickstarted the holiday season with a Christmas-themed episode hosted by Martin Short and Steve Martin, both former members of the Saturday Night Live cast.
In one of the most-watched programs in the US, the two famous comedians told viewers that the best way to get into the Christmas spirit is to drink too much, ignore their mental health and block out all the bad stuff, just like Elon Musk does with Twitter.
Musical guest Cecily Strong’s song included lyrics asking why Musk owns all the things he has and why he runs Tesla and now Twitter, asking if outer space isn’t enough for him.
Martin and Short’s monologue started with making fun of each other, then proceeded to poke fun at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and, finally, the World Cup.
Talking about their joint SNL hosting gig, Martin said that although no one was rooting for them, people would tune in to watch the show, making fun of Harry and Meghan’s Netflix documentary, “Harry and Meghan.”
Martin recounted his 15 appearances on the show while joking about the three times Short has appeared. He even compared working with his fellow actor to the World Cup, saying it was something Short couldn’t get into.
The monologue also included a funny bit about the actors writing each other’s eulogies and what they would say. The men began insulting each other with “In the Arms of an Angel” by Sarah McLachlan playing in the background.
According to Martin, Short’s dying words would be to engage Tesla’s autopilot, while Short said that Martin’s corpse would appear colorless, motionless, and stiff but still very life-like.
During the “Weekend Update,” Michael Che and Colin Jost joked about political topics, including the prisoner swap for Brittney Griner, Raphael Warnock’s victory in the Georgia Senate runoff, and Kyrsten Sinema’s Democratic Party exit.
Michael Che joked about Herschel Walker’s loss, saying that he doesn’t think it is the last time Americans will hear from the defeated Senatorial aspirant unless he is your biological father.
With the World Cup going on, people expected that a few sports jokes would find their way into the news segment. Jost said that Morocco’s victory over Portugal was the best performance by an African team since the African workers, who were unpaid, built the stadium.
Che made fun of Kyrie Irvin’s belief that we live in a flat world by saying Irvin got so depressed after the NBA cut ties with him that he might jump off the world’s edge.
SNL’s final episode for 2022 will be on December 17, with Austin Butler as the guest host and Lizzo as the musical guest.
