Aaron Jamal Dudley, 41, has been charged with a double murder, because he killed his sister and her unborn child.
The California man was arrested after Fresno police discovered the body of his eight-month pregnant sister in a trash can where he had set fire to it on December 13, 2022.
The unborn baby boy died when his mother, N-Kya Rebecca Logan, 26, was stabbed in the uterus.
The pregnant mom’s friends had just thrown a baby shower for her two days before her murder.
Logan was found by a maintenance crew near an apartment complex on North Cornelia Street in Fresno and police were called.
Detectives at the scene discovered Logan’s body in a trash can in an alley. The fire department and police uncovered a melted gas canister a few feet from her body, which presumably had been used by the killer to pour gasoline on her dead body and ignite it.
A witness said they had seen a man on the access road bringing a city garbage can to the area and starting a fire. They didn’t suspect anything sinister.
Security video footage from surrounding houses shows the accused, Dudley, pushing a garbage can out to the road from the house he shared with his sister. He then lit her body on fire.
During a press conference, Paco Balderrama, the Fresno Police Chief, said that several witnesses said they saw the fire. One of them took a picture of a man the police believe is the suspect, standing over Logan’s body. Balderrama also said that police had the surveillance footage of Dudley pushing a garbage can, which they believe contained Logan’s dead body.
Police officers executed a search warrant on Dudley’s home and arrested him as he was trying to flee.
Lisa A. Smittcamp, Fresno County District Attorney, said during the press conference on Wednesday that killing a fetus is murder and that the prosecution would seek the death penalty.
Although the police have not released a motive for the gruesome murder, the Police Chief said that witnesses said that the relationship between Dudley and his sister was not good, and that Dudley had a history of altercations with the family. Officers responded to the home on July 28, 2021 and Dudley was placed in detention for 72 hours. Logan said she feared for her life when she called the police that day.
Chief Balderrama said that it takes a lot of evil, hate, and planning to stab your pregnant sister and her unborn child to death.
