Another shark attack has been reported in Hawaii, the second in the last two weeks. This time, the victim was able to get away with his life.
An unidentified Waikoloa, Hawaii man, 68, going for his daily morning swim at Anaehoomalu Bay on Tuesday, fought off a 12-foot-long tiger shark with a diving knife after the shark bit him in the buttocks.
Witnesses said the man was in the water, about 400 yards from the beach, when the shark attacked and then released him.
An unidentified woman and a man quickly jumped on paddleboards to help the victim. The Hawaii Fire Department transported him to Queen’s North Hospital. The police statement said that he was in stable condition and that he would be transported to Oahu to get treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Land and Natural Resources Department in Hawaii confirmed that the man was attacked by a tiger shark.
Hawaii has had increased reports of shark attacks, concerning tourists and locals.
On Friday, December 9, a couple was attacked by a shark on the island of Maui while snorkeling. The husband told police he could not find his wife after the attack.
He said that he and his wife had fought off the shark before trying to swim back to shore. While the husband made it to shore, his wife did not. Later that day, search and rescue operators found part of a woman’s bathing suit and snorkeling set.
Fire Department and Ocean Safety officers in Maui searched for the unfortunate woman in the ocean using an aerial search. The Land and Natural Resources Department said that despite an extensive search of the area, they could not find the woman. It has been assumed that she was killed in the attack.
The department posted a picture on its Twitter account of a sign at Anaehoomalu Bay warning sunbathers that a shark had been seen around the area. They also put up warning signs at various resorts in the surrounding area and by ocean sports operators.
The US leads the world in shark attacks. There were 47 reported shark bites in 2021 and Florida reported the most cases.
