A college sophomore in Georgia had a very unfortunate run-in with an airplane propeller.
Georgia Southern University student, Sani Aliyu, 21, had rented the plane to impress his dinner date.
Aliyu was hit in the head with the propeller at Statesboro-Bulloch County Airport on Sunday, and was killed after he disembarked from the plane, after they returned home from dinner.
He flew to Savannah with a young female friend. The two got off the plane and he walked in front. He was killed on the spot.
The freak accident involved a single-engine Cessna where four people had been on board – the deceased, his date, and two friends who were the pilot and co-pilot. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
Sani Aliyu was a resident of Atlanta and a Management major at the college.
“We were deeply saddened to hear about the traffic incident that involved one of our students Sunday night,” Dr. Aileen Dowell, Georgia Southern University’s Dean of Students, said in a statement.
“I have already been in touch with his family and professors, and we have mobilized all available resources to provide counseling and any other assistance the university can give,” she related.
