Many people defend sharks and say they only attack when threatened, but there seem to be a lot of stories about threatened sharks these days.

Caroline DiPlacido, a 58-year-old woman from Pennsylvania on a vacation in the Bahamas, was killed by a bull shark while snorkeling. The area was a popular snorkeling location.

The family witnessed the attack. They managed to pull Caroline out of the water, with the help of employees of a local tour company, but she died due to upper body injuries.

Caroline was an employee of Gannon University, in Erie, Pennsylvania. She was snorkeling as part of an independent day-trip, while a passenger on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship that left Florida on Sunday.

The cruise ship was docked for the day in New Providence. The cruise line issued the following statement, “While on an independent shore excursion in Nassau, Bahamas, a guest sailing on Harmony of the Seas experienced injuries from a shark. After arriving at a local hospital for treatment, the guest passed away from their injuries. Royal Caribbean is providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

The attack occurred only half a mile from Rose Island, where a 21-year-old woman from California, Jordan Lindsey, was killed while snorkeling with her family in 2019

Just last month, an 8-year-old boy survived an attack by three nurse sharks in the Bahamas. He sustained injuries resulting in scarring of his legs.

The Bahamas has several species of sharks, and most do not pay attention to people, with the exception of  bull sharks and tiger sharks.
